Title: Shipment Tracking Numbers
Post by kevind on 11/05/03 at 13:17:10

We often ship multiple boxes against a given Sales order.

Is there any provision at this time to enter a tracking number for each box shipped against a given sales order?

Doesn't appear to be, but if you're shipping UPS, tracking a single number that is part of a multi-package shipment will find all of them.

Thanks for the reminder David.  I totally forgot about that.

I was thinking more from the standpoint of our shipping software.  We use a Package called CPS.  With CPS, we scan the Sales Order Barcode on the Packing list and all the shipping data is read directly from the DBA datafiles into CPS on the shipping department PC.

When the label is printed for a package, the shipping cost and tracking number data can be written back to a data table.  This means that I will have x records for a given sales order when x boxes are shipped against it.

I now see that when I process this data to plug in shipping cost and tracking information, I will want to total all the shipping costs, but only use the first tracking number.

Kevin,

If you don't mind, a few questions -

How do you like CPS?
Does it integrate well with DBA?
What method are you using to transfer the info?

Thnaks,

David,
CPS Works great.  I use ODBC to grab all Shipping information directly from the DBA data files (This should not suprise you!  ;D.

I modified the Packing Slip report to include Barcode for the Shipper # and Sales Order #.  We have a CCD Barcode reader on the CPS shipping Computer so that the Shipping people only need to scan the shipper # and Sales order number to get all the shipping info.

A couple of weeks ago, I changed CPS to access the shipping information through a View instead of directly from BKARINV.  Boy, this worked great!!

This allowed me to specifiy a SELECT statement that uses IF logic to pass a ShipElert Email address to CPS.

I now have 3 ways that a Shipelert Email address is selected:

1. If an email address exists on SO Note Line #1, then it is used.
2. If an email address exists on AR Contact #5,  then it is used.
3. If an email address exists on AR Contact #1, then it is used.

With this select logic, Everybody that we had an email address on started getting ShipElerts.  Some of them called and said that they wanted shipElerts to go to a different address, so we enter that one in Contact #5.  This still allows a specific order from a customer to use a unique email (like a drop ship request).  The highest priority email address is the one in the SO Note.

Kevin,

This "CPS" sounds like what we need.  Where did you get it?  Was it hard to implement?

Feel free to call me toll-free at 888-735-5607.

Kevin,

I spoke with an ex-ups software tech that is now working at a manufacturing company.  He indicated that UPS World Ship software (which we already have) has similar features as CPS (without the cost).  Did you try UPS World Ship prior to CPS?  Does anyone use UPS World Ship and DBA with a barcode scanner for importing items into UPS?

I did not use World Ship.  We have been a CPS user now for about 4 years.  I would not trade this smaller company service and support for anyhing.
