Can you acess DBA through a Virtual Private Network connection? We have a couple of employees currently working form home and would like to acess DBA from home.

Yes, you can. Although you will likely find it brutally slow. Normally if someone is remote and doing anything other than a small bit of work or some lookups or reports and such, a Terminal Services set-up is HIGHLY preferred.

Might want to check into that, depending on your circumstance/requirement.

We use RealVNC, to connect to DBA from home

Easy to setup and most important it's free!!

They have realease version 4

Another option to RealVNC is UltraVNC.

UltraVNC has better performance over RealVNC. It also provides integrated file transfer, chat and server side screen scaling.

UltraVNC has saved me countless steps in support of the other 12 workstations we have.

We use gotopmypc for remote access. It's real easy and fast. We pay a modest annual fee. I

'm curious about the comparison to realvnc and ultravnc. Any thoughts?

My understanding is that by using gotomypc, you can access your pc anywhere even if it has a dynamic IP.

If you use the UltrVNC server and register a FREE Domain name at NO-IP.COM, you get the same benifit. NO-IP.COM provides a small application that runs as a service to update their domain servers with your ip address.

UltraVNC server opens two listening ports. One of them is used if you remotely control your pc with the UltraVNC Viewer. The other port is accessed with a browser that downloads a java application that provides the same functionallity as the UltraVNC viewer. This allows you to VNC your machine anywhere you have access to a browser.

If you have an incomming firewall, you would need to route a couple of public ports to a specific machine to control. UltraVNC comes with a Redirector that allows you to control other machines on your local network from the one that is pointed to by the firewall.

Best of all, UltraVNC is a Free sourceforge project, and the NO-IP.COM dynamic naming service is also free.

Sounds interesting. Thanks for the informative feedback. We'll do more investigation to improve our knowledge and weigh the pros/cons of making changes. Appears that gotomypc requires far less technical knowledge/support.

All of this is fine for a bit of low-level access capability or to retrieve files and such.

However, if you are actually needing to run a database application remotely (such as DBA) then terminal services is definitely the preferred route as it was designed/intended for this type of functionality.

I agree with Lorne, We use terminal services (Built into win2k server) for connections worldwide. I have had as many as 15 people connected at once with no problem at all!!

My remote users can do anything someone in the office can do.

Before I did this... I struggled HARD with VPN connections for DBA access.
