Title: User Controls
Post by Rbuchanan on 07/21/05 at 03:39:42

If there's nothing out there already to do this, would it be tough to create a maintenance module that would a)lock BDS/Evo so noone else could login, and b) give you a listing of who is currently logged in and in what program/module???

Numerous occasion is tells us to have everyone logged out, but getting all my users out is problematic at best.  THen once they are out, keeping them out is also a problem.  They figure ten minutes is enough and just log back in.  Unfortunately I might still be trying to get everyone out for the first time!

I remember in my old Novell server I could disable login and then get them out.  That way they couldn't get back in before I said so, but it meant out of everything on the computers, not just the accounting software.

Well, you can see who's logged in by going to Pervasive > Utilities > Monitor, and click on Microkernal > Active Users.

As far as preventing them from logging in, I can't help you there. However, you could try telling them that they may not log back in until you've sent them an email (or some other form of communication) telling them it's OK.

Dave-

Thanks!  I found the Pervasive monitor through another problem and it has been a great help.  In fact, because it gives the open files and lock status I was able to diagnose another problem I was having too!

You obviously have your users trained better than mine.  If I sent them an e-mail telling them not to login, half of them wouldn't get it since they're on the shop floor with no e-mail access, and the other half either wouldn't read it or would go back 10 minutes latter thinking surely it would be OK now! ;)

I feel your pain on the subject of employees logging back in too soon.  I'm not recommending this, but thought it might amuse you. We have a very small office, so I've resorted to a set of notes on red paper that I place on each person's keyboard. It has "DBA" on it with the circle/slash symbol. I have to go around and collect them when its OK to log back in.  ::)

Well, we have a lot fewer of them, too!

Yeah, the guys I've got would just move the note!  :P

That and circling a 80,000 sf plant is getting to be a pain.  I figure this is the corporate health policy.  It's been 100 outside and 110 in the plant a lot lately, so I get to exercise (walking around the plant) and use the company sauna at the same time.  I don't know how our production staff has ben able to handle the heta and humidity for the past month.
