Title: SM-J-B archive Work Orders  advantages?
Post by Laura Oliver on 10/19/07 at 07:09:35

We close WOs, but have never archived them.

It appears from reading the Help that even if you archived one you can restore it to active, and that an archived WO can be job costed.

HELP doesnt give the advantages or disadvantages of archiving WOs.

What is the disadvantage of archiving WOs?  Any advantages?
Does it make things faster?

If I remember correctly, from the training in LA last January, the advantage is speed of processing work orders.  And that's about it.

Since I've got DBA in 1998, I have not archived or purged anything.  Disk space does not seem to be one of our problems (but we have many other problems!!!)

The advantage to archiving Work Orders and purging closed Sales Orders (SM-J-J) is an increase in speed in IN-A, any Rebuild Stock Status, and MR-F (if you use MRP).  Those routines always have to look through ALL records in the active order files so purging or archiving will speed them up.

Lynn,

Our IN-A rebuilding stock status seems to take a long time, especially on high volume items.  We will give that a try.

P.S. Thanks for all the good info at the Bloomington training!

Lynn,

It looks as if archiving them has done some good.  Is there any advantage to archiving?
