Title: Open File Security Warning BKTOF.COM
Post by gtladmin on 01/19/09 at 07:51:06

Weird--this morning, the AR person was running a check register(GL-I) and also posting (GL-O) and kept getting an XP security warning popping up:
Open File - Security Warning
The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?
Name:  bktof.com
Publisher:  Unknown Publisher
Type:  MS-DOS Appliaction
From:  H:\

Sure enough, there is a 1KB file in our EvoERP folder called BKTOF.COM, dated 9/28/1994.  Never seen that before, not sure how or why it's there. In order for her to continue doing her Evo, she had to click RUN.

I renamed the file to .old to see what would happen the next time she posts, which will be later today.  Can I just del this file?  Where did it  come from?

Val

Ok, update: when posting today again, the process went smoothly and no issues with having renamed that mystery file, so I just went ahead and deleted it.

Val,

That is a real DBA file.  I suspect it has to do with old dot matrix printers and TXT reports. but based on your findings I guess it is no longer necessary.

Now you know a file is truly obsolete when the programmer of the application essentially says "Heck if I know what that does"

LOL yup... It predates me with DBA. I started working for DBA in 1999.  And I have never seen or used BKTOF.com.

I predate Allen with DBA (and on the planet for that matter) and I think the file was used by the old DOS version text printing.  I suspect that when the programs were converted from DOS to Windows and started using the Windows printer drivers, the old call to the file was never removed even though it really doesn't do anything.
