Combining Item Numbers

DBA does not let you delete an item number once you have sales history.  In many cases, however, it would be useful for us to combine the sales history of an obsolete item number with that of a new item number.  Sort of like the program that combines two vendors into one code.  Would anyone else find this useful?

We would cetainly have a use for this.  After nearly 15 years of entering (and carrying forward) part numbers many have become duplicated.  This might be an easy way of cleaning up our inventory.

Since we are a job shop, our finished goods part numbers are the same as our customer's part numbers from their PO's.  We have had many occasions where the customer has been bought out by another company and the new company changes the part numbers.  This functionality would be very helpful.

You can change part numbers through SM-J-L.  If you know before you create your new part number that you want to forward all the info, you would have all your info forwarded.  Only helps a small part of the problem.  If both part numbers are ALREADY created, this does not work.  But it might help for future part numbers.

Lynn posted this as an answer to another question but I  want  it to be attached to this thread for future reference.

And as for merging items....I know this sounds backwards but it will work.

1.  Make adjustments so any on-hand quantity is in the part number you want to get rid of (not the one you want to keep).
2.  Use Maintain Database and delete the records from BKICMSTR, MTICMSTR and BKICLOC for the part number you want to keep.
3.  Use SM-J-L and change from the part number you want to get rid of to the one you want to keep.  This will merge all the history and open orders.
4.  Bring the part up in IN-A to reset the stock status.
