slow menus...
06/14/05 at 05:53:04

Hi,
The menus in DBA EVO are loading extremely slow. Running any of the program are fairly speedy though. The menus take an average of 10 seconds to load which adds up throughout the day. Any suggestion on getting them to load faster? I'm running DBA on a 850mhz. server running MS Server 2000. All the the client computers are over 500mhz. some are 850mhz or better and they have the same problem.

Thanks

Jim

What type of Ethernet are you operating, more specifically, what type of network cards (NICs) do you have installed in your computers?  The difference in speed between 10Base-T and 100Base-T is noticeable, I would suggest at the minimum to use the latter, considering the cost differential between the technologies is negligible.

Although we have not yet converted our network to Gigabit Ethernet (1000Base-T), as only our server has the hardware capabilities at this time (everything else is dual speed 10/100), I am anticipating doing so in the near future, and would expect that to have a profound impact on DBA/Evo speed as well.

I would be very interested to hear of the speed increase on a change to gigabit. The price of gigabit switches (with 1000x on every port, not just the uplink) has been pretty exhorbitant to date, but may be worth it if there are significant increases.

In theory, you would be operating 10 times as fast as a 100Base-T, 100 Mbps connection.  I performed a speed test a while back, differentiating between 10 and 100Base-T NICs, to substantiate the cost of upgrading to gigabit equipment.  Transferring a 100MB file from the office to our warehouse using a 10Base-T NIC took just over 100 seconds, and with a 100Base-T NIC just over 10 seconds.

As data files get larger, the speed issues will become more apparent.  Unfortunately, with all newer technology, the cost is more burdensome.  Will gladly post my findings when we "go gigabit," and would also be interested in hearing from anyone else who already has.

Are you running Virus Scan Like the lovely Norton? It helps to exclude in the scan *.RUN and *.RWN type files.
It is totally save to do so.
