Automatic Menu Updating
02/02/07 at 06:40:57

A nice feature for upcoming versions would be a program that automatically runs the program replace function for each program that is new in the new version. For instance, if SO-A were to get a Tas7 version then the utility would automatically go through the menu files and update everyone to use the new Tas7 version. The current way is error prone and unfriendly.

I could see some benifit to this. My one concern would be the utility would have to only look at existing menu items of each login. It would be a real pain if the utility gave every user ALL buttons that they should not have access to.

Just a thought.

Yeah, I didn't mention that but obviously you would want to only find and replace and not globally give the new command(s) to everyone.

This utility already exists. t6menuutil.rwn  but it is not up to date with the new T7 programs, also it does not add new programs to anyones menu, it simply changes program names  ie. BKINA.run to T7INA.rwn  etc...

The T7 programs (new GUI screens) were released as a trial in the 10/31/06 update. When they are ready, we will add them to the correct menu position and add them to the menuutil program.

Oh ok, I thought that they were supposed to be all ready to use.

I'll tell you one thing that people here don't like about the T7 programs at all: Tabbed viewing. They like it all on one page. This is one thing they hated about DBA NG as well. There's just something great about being able to see all of the information at a glance. So, it's good that you provide the option of views because the tabbed one is right out for us.

I really like the idea of the tabbed view (especially if speed is improved), but I wish that we could do a better job of getting the "right" information on the tab. Different users are looking for different info and each like to be able to see what they are looking for at a glance. Perhaps there will be a day when the tab content can be customizable. As it sits now, about one in three users are satisfied with the divisions.

Yes, that is the biggest complaint. Since not all of the info is on the page at once there will inevidably be fields that aren't on the same tab that a given user would want on the same tab. Asthetically the tabbed view may be more appealing but pragmatically the single page view is more efficient. Once a user is used to the layout of the single form they can very easily find any information they are looking for at a glance.

Personally I don't mind the tabbed view but other people here are deadset against it. Being able to arrange the fields so that a user has all the info they need on one tab would probably be a good compromise. Another thing that I think it currently lacks but would really negate the negatives of tabbed viewing: Hotkeys for the tabs. Say, F3, F4, F5, etc. That way the info is still readily accessable without having to click the tabs or anything. It would be quick and easy.

Well they are Windows compliant tabs (at least, the IN-B that I have), so you can use <Ctrl>+<Tab> or <Shift>+<Ctrl>+<Tab>.

Yeah but I'm not a fan of pressing multiple keys at once if one will do. Still, it does work, it's just not as easy or intuitive as pressing an F key.

You can switch between Tab View and Full Screen view by clicking the DBA or Evo icon on the toolbar.  If you are in Tab (Evo) view, there is a DBA Icon on the upper left; if you are in DBA Full Screen view, there is an Evo icon on the lower left.  Each time you load the program it will remember the view you were last on so each user can use a different view.

Yes, I know. In fact, I even mentioned that fact in this thread! Wink I'm just trying to brainstorm better ways for the tabbed view to work.
