Image links in inventory
03/06/07 at 13:29:00

Since the origonal Image link idea has gotten out of hand (  Grin thank goodness ), I suggest that the field 'Image Link:' be changed to read something more general like 'Documents' or 'Links', etc.

When adding links, I would like to have an additional field called 'Description'.  When the link box is displayed, the Description field would display instead of the actual link.  If the description field is left blank, then the link would be displayed.

We are linking to documents that we have stored in our document management system (Knowledgetree).  The link is a very simple URL that brings up documents by DocumentID.  The DocumentID is a number that acts as a handle to the current version of a document.  It is very non-descript (just a number).  If I had a description field (40 characters or so), this field could say something like 'RoHS Document', 'Datasheet', 'MSDS' etc.

By referencing documents stored in a document management system, you never have to change the link, the most current document is always presented, access is controlled, and a log of updates and changes is automatically kept.

Kevin,

The New Links ( www.istechsupport.com/dl/evolinks.zip ) do just that.. actually the description is a memo field so you can write the great american novel if you wish... and Images show a preview etc..  also it address the 256 char paths (current Image Links dba is only 60 char).

There is a button in the links that will convert your current Image links to the new Links system.

This does require Evo to run...

There is a readme.txt file in the zip for installation instructions.

Great.  That sounds good.

I have tried EVO a couple of times now.  I'm just not ready to open that can of worms yet.

Someday we will, but I have PC and People issues, not to mention the existing EVO issues, to deal with.  Frankly, I'm not ready to learn new workarounds and nuances.

Using KnowledgeTree, our links consist of just a number.  If another field could not be added to Classic, it would be nice if I could separate the link from a description in the link field.

For example, if the link field read:
  5|Data Sheet

then only
  Data Sheet

would be displayed in the Link popup and
 5

would be concatenated to the end of my global link path:
  ktdms./view.php?fDocumentID=

resulting in Internet Explorer opening:
Code:
http://ktdms./view.php?fDocumentID=5

I dont know if it's safe (but it sounds like it is) but it's easy enough to setup a testbed. Just copy your whole evoerp folder to a different folder and do whatever you want in that folder. Update Evo, change data, delete things, have a ball. If it doesn't work out then delete your test folder and there's no harm.

If you don't tell Pervasive where the copy of the data is, won't it still use the original data folder?

actually I went one better.. there is an SD-Q setting to turn it on or off. So you can use it on your live data and it won't hurt anything.. and you can turn it on or off whenever you like. There is a convert button to convert your existing Image links to the new Evo Links.

I am just about to do a video demo of it to show people what it does.  I also found something I wanted to change in it, so If you have already downloaded it. Go back and get it again..

In Classic, you need to make sure that your ED-D 'Edit Data Location File' is set up with relative paths and not Absolute ones.
For example:
   'N:\dbamfg\default\'   is an Absolute path
'default\'   is a Relative path (Relative to the DBAMFG folder)

Evo is the same although in both cases, it is UT-D that the path is defined.  So long as it is a relative rather than absolute path then each copy of the DBAMFG folder becomes a completely separate entity.
