Sequential serial numbers during WO-I
08/01/07 at 13:24:35

When entering finished production for a serial numbered item, I would like to see the following changes:

After the first serial number and it's note is complete, ask if all items to be received will have the same note.  If yes, then ask if the remaining items are sequentially numbered.  If yes, then automatically complete the receipt by creating a new SN record for each item received and copying the notes.

If the answer to the note question is no, then just go back and ask for the next serial number like it does now.  However, each time after the notes have been entered, ask the same two questions.  I would rather the questions be on the screen rather than pop-up messages, so that you can see how you answered them last time.

It would also be possible to deal with SN's that have a different increment.  If you answer Y to the remaining are sequential a little popup window could ask for the increment (defaulting to 1) so that you could go by 5's 10's, etc.

At this time, the only reason we only use serial control on one item is because it is so cumbersome.

Since the serial number field is a string, it would be important in the automatic SN generation to only look at the last number in the string when calculating the next given the increment.  For example, if your serial numbers took on the format 12345-101-1 and you wanted an increment of 1, then the next one would be 12345-101-2, next 12345-101-3, etc.

This is already available as an custom add-on.  But making it standard would be difficult because as you say, the Serial Number is a string and everybody has it configured differently with different character positions being the ones that would increment.

We have nearly all finished goods lotted or serialized. Very few of our serialized products are sequential. I'd be in trouble if I told WO-I users that they had to deal with pop-ups and auto serializing routines. No pop ups. If it were a separate version of WO-I that could be used when auto-serializing, that would be workable.

or just have the serial notes turned off, then a bar code scan input would work real smooth  Cool

Is there an option to turn off serial Notes or is this a wish list SD-Q option?   undecided

Since my suggestion for an OPTION to automatically handle sequential serial numbers was torpedoed, I would suggest the following to make Serial Control and Finished production more friendly when serial numbers are involved:

1. During serial control, when the QTY field in the upper right corner is updated with the qty as each serial number is entered, also display the last serial number entered below it.

2. Allow some kind of look up so that incorrectly entered serial numbers can be removed.  Serial control is such a trap door.  If you make one mistake, it is a real pain to fix let alone train others to fix it.

3. While entering Finished production, show a remaining QTY field and a last serial number entered.  Right now, the screen does not change as you enter serial numbers and it causes a lot of confusion for people.

4. Allow some kind of look up when entering serial numbers in finished production so that mistakes can be fixed right there.  This is also a trap door function where you can not back up.
