I would like to know the effects in costing (we use average costing exclusively) of changing a 'M' type part to an 'A' type part in order to create a work order, then changing it back to a 'M' type part again.

Without taking a look I can't answer the question.

However, I do have a suggestion:

Make a copy of your normal operating company and call it SandBox. Then you can go in there and play in the Sand to your hearts content and don't have to worry about breaking someone else's toys.

It's a good idea to delete the SandBox and re-create it about once a year or when any major changes are made in the way you do things.
