Work orders for machining?

I can't seem to figure out a good way to do this...

We'd like to start tracking machining time on the milling of dies for projects.

For instance, on a new part we might have to cut brand news dies AND run parts. I'd like to put both on the same WO as they are both on the Sales Order and the customer is getting charged for both. Now, machining is not tied to part quantities it's just a one time thing. What's the best way to track that via a work order? Should I try to do two work orders for each machining/stamping project, one for each phase? If so do I just claim the dies as one part and use really big per part times for the machining steps?

Yes, starting a new phase of program usage is fun...

It seems to me that you would want 2 seperate work orders in the case you described. Use WO 1234-1 for the die and 1234-2 for the parts. That way you have good costing for the parts if you ever need it and you don't have to remake the die. If you use SO to generate WO you will automatically get a WO for each line item. If, for some reason, you want to get info on both items you can assign a Job number to to both items (say 1234) and get reports for both items at once. For my money the most important reason is getting the accurate job costing for each of the line items.

It really comes down to how you price/charge for the part. If you charge separately for the die, I would use a Part Number for the die and create a second WO. If the price is included in the part, do it as a Routing.
