PO release upon request
08/13/08 at 11:29:00

It would be nice to have different revisions for the PO after each release. We place lots of blanket orders that are release upon request. What we do right now, is enter the item with requested date to be 01/01/09. This is our indicator that this item is on a blanket. and everytime we contact our supplier to release a certain quantity, we have to physically go into the PO, create a new line with the correct quantity released and date and update the old line with the correct quantity remaining on the blanket.
Having the option to have different revisions of releases would help us a lot.

Is this easily implemented?

Why do you have to change the PO? Can't you just call the vendor with the quantity you need and receive that quantity against the PO when it arrives?

This is what we do in both directions. Our vendors get a blanket with "Release on Request" and the approved quantity for the year. We get the same thing from our customers. We make a SO with the whole quantity and a date at the end of their fiscal year (4/30), then release as they need it, leaving the rest on back order.

We need to control the quantity and dates of the releases. Its our way to let receiving know what to expect and when.(we do not receive over shipments) As well, its used by our purchasing to follow up with vendors for any delays. We have had a few issues where items on blanket have not been shipped promptly and it delayed production. As well we need to know expected receiving dates.

Dont you need to control the amount received? how does your receiver know the amount you released?

Our purchasing and receiving people are in the same department and are within a few feet of each other. Everything that is received goes directly to the purchasing agent, who is also responsible for stock. I can see the reason for your method. The right hand needs to know what the left is doing.

Also, we do not use the DBA scheduling. Our scheduling is more hands-on and critical incoming parts are tracked on a white board. We have gone to a very positive control manufacturing environment where everyone is aware of the customer due date and shares in the success or failure of meeting expectations.
